Can Symbian Operating System be used in Tablets?

Symbian operating system went fully open source in the first quarter of the year 2010. Lee Williams, Chief Executive of the Symbian Foundation, in an interview said that it is very likely that you would see Symbian-based tablet within the next year or two. He also said that several companies are experimenting with PDA-tablet-style form factors and Internet-connecting device, which is running low power on mainly ARM architecture.

Symbian OS is currently targeted on Smartphones market, which is acquiring 28.9% of the total market share. The latest version of Symbian operating system is Symbian 3, which was released in fourth quarter of the year 2010. Features of Symbian^3 are –

  1. Full HDMI supports, which allows you to watch videos or movies at 1080p display resolution.
  2. It supports single-tap as well as multi-touch display.
  3. It supports more than one personalized home screens.
  4. It supports hardware acceleration of cryptographic algorithms.
  5. It supports multi-core hardware or symmetric multiprocessor (SMP).
  6. It also supports ARM CPU architecture.

As you can see that Symbian^3 is offering all features, which is required on tablet. So, Symbian OS can be used in tablets. However, it has to set up high standards in order to compete with Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, Palm’s WebOS and Blackberry’s tablet operating systems. Since, these operating systems had already entered the tablet market and are becoming popular day by day.

Nokia has also announced that Symbian^4 will be coming as an upgrade for the Symbian^3 operating system early this year. So, Symbian^4 might be one of the candidate operating system for the upcoming Nokia Tablets. Symbian^4 will have a whole new graphical approach for the user interface, according to Nokia.

By looking at the features of the latest version of Symbian operating system, we can hope that if Nokia is planning to use Symbian OS on tablet, then it will come out to be a perfect tablet.
