Nokia Symbian Market Share worldwide

Nokia’s Symbian operating system is winning the Smartphones operating system wars, since past few years; there was no competition to this operating system. However,Gartner, the world’s top research company, has recently revealed their report for the worldwide Smartphone market share for year 2010.

According to that report, more than 1.5 billions of Smartphones were sold in the year 2010; a 31.8% increase from 2009. Out of those 1.5 billion units, around four millions of Nokia mobile phones were sold; acquiring 28.9% of total market share. However, there was an 8 percent drop in the market share from the year 2009. The reason for this downfall was the strong sales in Q4 2010 of the Apple and RIM Smartphones.

In the Smartphone operating system market share, Symbian operating system was acquiring a 37.6% of total market share. However, the these figure was 46.9% in the end of the year 2009; there was a 10 percent drop in the operating market share within a year. The reason for the downfall was the growth of the Android operating system in the third and fourth quarter of the year 2010. Android operating system market share grew 888.8 percent in the year 2010, which was an unbelievable success for any mobile operating system.

It seems that Nokia’s market share in both, operating system and mobile phones, is continuously dropping. There has been significant downfall in the market share from 2009. However, Nokia has recently outlined its new strategic direction for the year 2011, which include a broad strategic alliance with the Microsoft to build a new global mobile ecosystem. According to its new strategy, Symbian operating system will become a franchise platform; leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value. They are also expecting to sell around 150 million of more Symbian devices in this year.
